Onycha

Onycha

Onycha is known as a biblical medicine and was required as an ingredient in the formula for the Holy Incense together with Galbanum (Exodus 30:34) and has a pleasant vanilla overtone.

Some biblical commentaries identify Onycha as a type of sea crab or mollusk, as the Hebrew word carries such a connotation. However shellfish and crabs are declared unclean and forbidden as food to the Israelites (Deut 14: 9-10) and it is unthinkable as an ingredient in the Holy Incense.

The Hebrew word shecheleth means “to peel off by concussion of sound”, its root word shachal means to “to roar like a lion”.  This fragrance represents the voice of God (Joel 3:16), and as we express His words back to Him in attitude of intercession, warfare, worship and prophecy, His authority is released over our lives.
