Balm of Gilead Anointing Oil is used in prayer for healing and restoration.

“Is there no balm in Gilead? Is there no physician there? Why then is the health of the daughter of my people not restored?” (Jeremiah 8:22, NIV)

Gilead was well known for “balm of Gilead” trees. The oil or resin was exuded through an opening made in its bark, weeping out in small quantities. A plaster of gums was used as a prescription for healing wounds.

The word “balm” or “balsam” (Greek) means “lord” or “chief of oils.” In Hebrew, the root meaning of “tsori” is “to run blood” or “to bleed” (of a vein).

Israel’s priests and prophets were the physicians to the nation. Repentance and righteousness were her balm for healing. Gilead was to Israel what Israel spiritually was to the whole world. Spiritual balm, God’s salvation and healing, comes only through the shed blood of Jesus Christ.
