Elijah’s name means Yahweh is my God.
He was a major prophet in the Northern Kingdom of Israel during the reign of Ahab where Baal worship was prevalent.
He was a man of great faith and showed a bold zeal for God used him to confront many evils and to defend the worship of God. His life was characterized by many challenges, miracles, and adventures. Some of these include raising the dead (1 Kings 17:17-24), bringing fire down from the sky (1 Kings 17-18), it ceased to rain for 3 years (1 Kings 17: 1), he ascending into heaven in a whirlwind of fire (2 Kings 2: 11-12). He was at the transfiguration of Jesus (Matt 17: 3).
His life symbolized the life of Jesus Christ.
Elijah names Elisha his successor and asks him “ Ask what I shall do for you before I am taken from you, to which Elisha answered “please let a double portion of your spirit be upon me: (2 Kings 2: 9)
