Hyssop in Hebrew (ezob) means ‘holy herb’. In preparation for the Exodus, the Israelites were instructed to strike the lintels of their door posts with a hyssop branch after soaking it in the blood of the lamb.
This striking released the aroma and fragrance of the Hyssop plant and is a foreshadowing of Christ being struck on the cross, and providing us with protection through His blood. Ex 12: 22 – 24. The Hyssop branch was also used to give Jesus vinegar on the cross.
Hyssop is symbolic of Spiritual cleansing and purification. In Ps 51:7-9 King David records “Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean.”
